January 18 & 24 – for players born in 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, and 2014

ALL PLAYERS MUST REGISTER FOR TRYOUTS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A TEAM

Missing Tryouts?

If you are unable to attend tryouts, you still MUST REGISTER so you can be considered for placement on a team.

If you elect to not register and do not attend tryouts, you risk not being placed on a team.
If you decide at a later time (ex: April) that you would like to play soccer and wish to be considered for placement on a PVU team, you will still pay the tryout fee and be evaluated for placement if there is roster space in the team.

Current PVU competitive players missing tryouts:

Still register so we know you would like to play. We will rely on your coaches evaluation from the season for team placement.

New to PVU or players coming from the PVU Rec Program missing tryouts:
Still register so we know you would like to play. If there is roster space after the tryouts, we will have you attend a team practice for an evaluation.

Attendance

Player attendance at both tryout sessions is essential and gives your player the best chance for PVU coaches to assess their on-field performance effectively and increases their chances of being placed on the appropriate level team.

Attending just 1 of the tryout dates is still beneficial although it may impact PVU coaches ability to effectively asses their ability.

Not attending tryouts may affect your player's opportunity to secure a spot on a team or at the level they wish to achieve.

Returning PVU players who miss tryouts, we will use your coach's evaluation from the previous season for team placement.

FEES

Tryouts - All age groups - $50 non-refundable tryout fee

Summer 2026 Fees:

2018-2016 = $649 (includes entry fee into 2 summer tournaments)

2015-2014 = $799

*Summer fees include 3 months of indoor dome and gym training and coaching fees

Top Team Fee:

For the 2015 & 2014 age groups, players on teams at the TCSL NPL or Regional level, there is an additional $100 fee that goes toward your coach's pay.

The Tryout

The evaluators are:

PVUFC Coaching Director
Team Coaches from the age group
Coaches from PVUFC

The activities:

We evaluate players while they are playing the game.

Players are evaluated based on T.I.P.S:

T: Technique (dribbling, running with the ball, 1v1 moves, passing, receiving, ball control, heading, finishing)
I: Insight (understanding the principles of play)
P: Personality (coachability, commitment, attitude, effort)
S : Speed (physical and mental)

Player placement decisions are based on a multitude of inputs, which include:

Fall season player evaluations
Winter training observations
Summer season player evaluations
Tryout results

Tryout Purpose

The purpose of PVU tryouts is to gather comparative data to determine your player's team placement for the upcoming season.

For U15+ teams, we hold tryouts in in order to finish before mid-August due to MN State High School rules.

Completing evaluations and forming teams in this timeframe is in line with other TCSL & MYSA club practices and facilitates club planning as we need to determine how many teams and coaches are needed and the amount of indoor training space we needed to secure for winter training.

Player Team Placement

Player placement is based on:

Tryout evaluation data
Coach evaluations from the previous seasons
Club year-round evaluation data

PVU makes every effort to place players who register and attend tryouts on an appropriate level team.

League roster size restrictions and the number of players trying out at an age group may prevent the placement of every player.

Placement on a team without attending tryouts is not guaranteed.

Sometimes it is necessary to combine age groups in order to form teams. The final decision is at the discretion of the PVUFC Director of Coaching.

Play-Up Policy

Players can be considered and tryout for an older age group. To be considered for an older age group, the player must:

Try out at both their age group AND the older age group.
Register your child only once at their correct Birth Year age group
Email PVU Director of Coaching and provide your child's name, gender, date of birth, current team (if applicable), and age group to try out for.

Players should play with their birth year. However, we recognize that in certain cases, due to a player's exceptional ability, advanced physical or emotional development, opportunities for that player to compete in older age groups may be appropriate. Opportunities for players to compete in an older age group will be decided by the PVUFC Director of Coaching. It is important to also keep in mind that the decision to allow a player to play up is an ongoing evaluation. An opportunity to play up in one year does not guarantee future opportunities. Opportunities will be evaluated and determined on an ongoing basis.

No Contest Policy

In order to maximize player development, we will do our best to place players on teams where they are surrounded by others of similar ability.

Players will be placed based on a combination of previous season evaluations and tryout evaluation.

Team placements are not negotiable. We cannot share specifics regarding rankings and scores.

Players looking for feedback on where they can improve should reference their end-of-season player evaluations.

Academy Program Placement Process

Tryouts are used to determine a player's eligibility for the Academy Program.

If selected, players are placed in the Academy and guaranteed a spot on a team for the upcoming season.

Team Placement Process:

Fall Season: Players are evaluated during the first few practices and then assigned to a "Pool Group" and team based on ability.

Summer Season: Players are evaluated during the first month of practices before being placed in a "Pool Group" and team.

Ability Groups:

Players are grouped into one of three tiers based on ability:
- Red
- White
- Blue

2013 & 2012 (U13 & U14)

🚨 Important Tryout & Team Information for 2013 & 2012 Players 🚨

🔹 One Tryout Only – July 2025

There is only ONE tryout for both Fall 2025 and Summer 2026 seasons.
No additional tryout in January (unlike in younger age groups).
Players should attend the July tryout to be placed on a team for the ’25-’26 season.

🔹 NPL & Regional Level Teams (2013 & 2012 Birth Years)

Players must commit to playing both the fall and summer seasons to be considered.
High School Soccer Rules:
- Players CANNOT play on their 9th/freshman team and PVU in the fall. MSHSL classify's 7th and 8th graders as high school participants which subjects them to the same MSHSL participation rules as high school athletes (grades 9-12)
- Players CANNOT play for their high school’s B-Squad, JV, or Varsity team AND PVU in the fall due to Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) rules.

🔹 State & Cities Level Teams (2013 & 2012 Birth Years)

Players have 3 options:
✅ Summer & Fall
✅ Summer Only
✅ Fall Only

July Tryout Process:
- Teams will be selected based on ability.
- Priority will be given to players choosing Summer & Fall and Summer Only.
- Players choosing Fall Only must still try out. They will be placed on a team if space is available and they meet the skill requirements. If not, their tryout fee will be refunded.

🚨 Important: If a player commits to Fall & Summer but later decides to play Summer Only, they may lose their roster spot if PVU needs to adjust team sizes. No refunds will be given.

🔹 Fall Season for State & Cities Teams

If enough players select Summer & Fall, the team will compete in the fall season as well.
If more players are needed to complete a fall roster, those who chose Fall Only will be considered.
PVU will try its best to form fall teams, even if it means combining age groups.

2011-2007 (U15-U18)

2011-2007 | The July tryouts are designed to form teams for the Summer 2026 season.

There is no fall season at these ages due to high school soccer.

NPL Teams begin training in November after the high school season.

Regional, State & Cities level teams begin training in February. Players can participate in the Winter Training Program in Nov-Jan to improve their technical skills.
