Age Group Information - 2024-2025 Season

2017-2013 | PVUFC offers 2 separate seasons; Fall 2024 and Summer 2025. The July tryouts are designed to form teams for our U9-U12 age groups who will be participating in the Fall 2024 season which runs from mid-August to mid-October. Tryouts for the Summer 2025 season will be held at the end of January 2025.

***NOTE*** for the 2017, 2016, & 2015 age groups. Tryouts are held to determine if a player should be selected for the Academy Program. If they are selected, they are placed in the Academy Pool for their age group. This guarantees they will be placed on a team for the fall season. Players are further evaluated in Pool training over the course of August to determine team and level placement. Players will be placed on their respective team by the end of August. More information on the Academy Program can be found here  - https://www.parkvalleyunitedfc.org/u9-u10-academy

***NOTE*** for the 2012-2011 Birth Years:

The July tryouts are designed to form teams playing in the Summer 2025 AND Fall 2024 seasons. Beginning at U13 (2012 birth year), there is only 1 tryout in July. You should attend this tryout to be placed on a team for the '24-'25 season. There is NOT a tryout in January for summer '25 like at the U9-U12 age groups.

  • For NPL and Regional level teams (At 2012 and 2011 birth years) - to be considered for the team, players have to play both the fall and summer seasons. These level teams play more of a year-round format to stay competitive with other clubs at these levels who are true year-round teams. Winter training will still remain optional but is highly encouraged.

What about High School Soccer for my 2012 or 2011 player? Players who participate on their high school’s 9th grade/Freshman team CAN play for both their 9th grade/freshman high school team AND PVU during the fall season. Parents should be aware that high school practices & games are Monday-Friday so it will be a lot to ask of your son/daughter to do both high school and PVU in the fall. Players CANNOT play on their high school’s 10th grade/B-Squad, JV or Varsity team and for PVU during the fall season. This is per MSHSL rules. PVU are asking players to choose their PVU club team who are in 7th & 8th grade. Again, this is for NPL or Regional League teams only.

  • State & Cities level teams (at 2012 and 2011 birth years) - players will have 3 season options to select from: Summer & Fall, Summer Only, Fall Only. At the July tryout, we will select the teams for the summer season based on ability. Players who select Summer & Fall and Summer Only will be evaluated and considered for the team.

Players selecting Fall Only will still need to try out. If there is room on a team and the player meets the ability-based criteria, they will be placed on the team for the fall season. If they are not placed on a team, their tryout registration fee will be refunded.

What about the fall season for State and Cities level teams? If enough players choose the Summer & Fall option, the team will also play in the fall season. If we need to fill out a roster, then those who selected Fall Only will be considered for the team for the fall season.

We will try our best to form fall teams including looking at combining teams and age groups.

2010-2007 | The July tryouts are designed to form teams for the Summer 2025 season. There is no fall season at these ages due to high school soccer.

Tryout Purpose

The purpose of PVUFC tryouts is to gather comparative data to determine your player's team placement for the upcoming season.

Per TCSL and MYSA bylaws, club player evaluations cannot begin until the summer season is over and most competitive team tryouts must be completed before mid-August due to MN State High School rules. Completing evaluations and forming teams in this timeframe is in line with other TCSL & MYSA club practices and facilitates club planning as we need to determine how many teams and coaches are needed and the amount of indoor training space we needed to secure for winter training.

Tryout Attendance

Player attendance at both tryout sessions is critical for the PVUFC coaches and evaluators to obtain a snapshot of a player's ability to perform on the field. Comparative data is an important part of our process and your player's attendance is critical to improving your child's chances of being placed on a team.

Please note, lack of attendance may impact your player's ability to earn a spot on a team.

Missing Tryouts

Can’t make it to tryouts?

YOU MUST STILL REGISTER FOR THE TRYOUT AND NOTE ON THE REGISTRATION FORM YOU WILL BE MISSING.  We will use your coach's evaluation for team placement.

New to PVU and will be missing tryouts? Still register so we know you would like to play. If there is roster space after the tryouts, we will have you attend a team practice for an evaluation.

Player Team Placement

Player placement is determined based on:

  1. Tryout evaluation data

  2. Coach evaluations from the previous season

  3. Club year-round evaluation data

PVUFC makes every effort to reserve a spot and place the players on an appropriate team who register and attend tryouts. Placement on a team without attending tryouts is not guaranteed.

Team Selection Process

Including Play-up Policy

Process

The team formation process will be led by the Director of Coaching, with input from the team coaches. Player placement decisions are based on a multitude of inputs, which include fall season player evaluations, winter training observations, summer season player evaluations, and tryout results.

While every effort is made to place each player on a Competitive team, league roster size restrictions and the number of players trying out at an age group may prevent the placement of every player.

The Tryout

The club provides tryouts for player assessments each season to place players on a team for the upcoming soccer season. The club will hold 2 tryouts for each age group.

The evaluators are:

  • PVUFC Coaching Director

  • Team Coaches from the age group

  • Coaches from PVUFC

The club will attempt to ensure the evaluators for each age group are the same for both tryout dates.

Team Formation

Teams are formed by the Director of Coaching and Team Coach and are based on the following selection criteria:

  • Tryout results

  • Coach’s evaluations from previous seasons

  • Club year-round evaluation data

Players are evaluated based on T.I.P.S:

  • T: Technique (dribbling, running with the ball, 1v1 moves, passing, receiving, ball control, heading, finishing)

  • I:   Insight (understanding the principles of play)

  • P: Personality (coachability, commitment, attitude, effort)

  • S : Speed (physical and mental)

U.S. Soccer Birth Year Guidelines

Team formation will follow the U.S. Soccer birth year guidelines (i.e. 2006, 2007, 2008, etc.) Players are NOT placed on competitive teams based on preference to be with players of a similar grade level or from common neighborhoods.

Playing Up

Players can be considered for older age groups and try out for an older age group. To be considered for an older age group, the player must:

  • Try out at both their age group AND the older age group.

  • Register your child only once at their correct Birth Year age group

  • Email PVUFC Director of Coaching and provide name, gender, date of birth, current team (if applicable), and age group to try out for.

As a general rule, players should play with their birth year. However, we recognize that in certain cases, due to a player's exceptional ability, advanced physical or emotional development, opportunities for that player to compete in older age groups may be appropriate. Opportunities for players to compete in an older age group will be decided by the PVUFC Directors of Coaching. It is important to also keep in mind that the decision to allow a player to play up is an ongoing evaluation. An opportunity to play up in one year does not guarantee future opportunities. Opportunities will be evaluated and determined on an ongoing basis.

Team Announcement

Announcements of teams will be communicated via email within 3 days of the last tryout for each age group.

Accepting Your Spot

You must Accept or Decline your team placement. Team placement is final. You will receive an email from PVU once your child is placed on a team, and you will have 72 hours to Accept or Decline your placement.

Initial Payment

When you accept your roster spot; a $50 deposit for the U9/U10 age groups and $100 deposit for the U11-U14 age groups and $200 deposit for U15-U19 age groups will be required.

Exceptions

Sometimes it is necessary to combine age groups in order to form teams. The final decision is at the discretion of the PVUFC Directors.

No Contest Policy

In order to maximize player development, we will do our best to place players on teams where they are surrounded by others of similar ability.

Players will be placed based on a combination of how they ranked on their previous team and tryout rankings.

Team placements are not negotiable. We cannot share specifics regarding rankings and scores.

Players looking for feedback on where they can improve should reference their end-of-season player evaluations.

FAQ

Why Do We Have Tryouts?

The club provides tryouts to place players on a team for the upcoming soccer season. All Competitive Boys and Girls players must register for tryouts. They are necessary to determine your player's team placement.

Why do we have tryouts now when we are not playing until next summer?

Completing tryouts for high school aged players and forming teams in this timeframe is in line with other TCSL club practices and facilitates club planning as we need to determine how many teams and coaches are needed and the amount of indoor training space we need to secure for winter training.

Why do I need to participate in tryouts if I am not trying to play on the top team?

Every player needs to tryout in order to be evaluated and placed on a team. Player attendance at both tryouts is critical for the PVUFC team selection committee to obtain a snapshot of a player's ability to perform on the field. Comparative tryout data is an important part of our process and your player's attendance is critical to improving our chances of providing a successful soccer experience

What if I cannot make it to the tryouts?

You must still register to be considered for placement on a team. No player is guaranteed a spot on a team and “close calls” will go to those that attend tryouts.

Please note - lack of tryout attendance will limit your player's ability to earn a spot on an upper-level competitive level team.

We will use your coach's evaluation from the previous season for team placement.

New to PVU and will be missing tryouts? Still register so we know you would like to play. If there is roster space after the tryouts, we will conduct an evaluation at the teams first practice.

Do I need to register to tryout or be evaluated?

YES, you must register to be considered for team placement. You can register in person on the day of tryouts but we highly encourage you to avoid long lines by registering online. It will make your check-in process go smoother and quicker

Why do I need to pay and what do I get for my money?

The fee is to cover the cost of field rental, evaluators, and t-shirts we give to each player.

How will we know which team we are on?

Within 3 days after the completion of tryouts for all age groups, each player will receive an email with their team placement.

How do I accept my spot?

Within 3 days after the completion of tryouts for all age groups, each player will receive an email with their team placement. Within that email is an accept button to click to accept your roster placement.
